Barbican, Not Barbican’t!

Peace, mercy, and blessings you beautiful human being you.

After my volunteer job, I decided to go on a mini city adventure. I popped on a barclays bike, and pedalled down the streets of London. I found myself at the Barbican.

Here are some pictures from my ‘adventure’.

Forever and a day…

Salamu walaykum, (Allah’s peace be upon you)

It feels like ages since I’ve posted anything here, and I’m pretty sure I was sitting down to write a post last week, but I can’t find it in my drafts, and I don’t seem to have posted it, so perhaps that was a dream?

Any who, how are you?
How are you doing? What’s new in your life?

Alhamdulillah (All praise is due to Allah) I’ve been really busy, and blessed lately. You probably know by now, that I prefer it when I’m busy, and my mind is being engaged, and I’ve got to make use of my reminder app, my phone’s calendar, the calendar in my living room, and my organiser to get everything done.

If you didn’t know…. Now you do! I’m always at my most efficient, when I’m busy, and I’m aware that every moment counts.

BSL lvl1 102 exam

Good morning people!
This is just an update about how my second BSL exam went this Monday.

I got to class about half an hour early, and ended up waiting in this lounge area, which is down the corridor from my class, and is where most of us normally wait if we arrive early or are having a break. I saw one of my classmates there, and we started signing to each other, asking how each other’s weekends were, and if we were ready for the exam.
Other people trickled in to the lounge, and then people started bringing out bsl (British sign language) books out and actually it was kind of funny, because there was a moment when this lady was asking about this other ladies’ partner, and the sign for partner is a bit similar to the sign for prison/prisoner, and both of those signs are not too far off from exam. 🙂

So five minutes before class I started making my way down the corridor to our classroom (408) and our tutor beckoned us in. We went over some tips, and then we partnered up to have general conversations (in bsl of course). We’d sign, then swap partners. And sign again.

It was pretty cool I think, especially if you think about the fact that in October when we first started, fingerspelling our names was an achievement, not to talk of carrying out a lengthy conversation about your family, or what you got up to during your grocery trip.

After that, our tutor wrote out the times are exams would be at, next to the list of our names. (Half of our class had already completed their exam that morning). I think I was third to last to be examined. We all headed back to the lounge and tried to figure out what three topics we’d get to choose from.

Basically we’d had five possible topics that we’d be recorded signing with our tutor on, and of those five three were chosen by the signature body (and sent to our tutor) then of those three, when we each went in for the exam we’d choose one topic to have a conversation on for five minutes.

When the lady before me went in I was feeling a little bit nervous, so instead of waiting in the lounge, I went and sat outside our classroom, where it was dark because the automatic lights shut off when there’s no motion detected along the corridor.

I just sat there and breathed quietly steadying myself, and said a little prayer. When it was my turn to go in I stood up feeling a bit less nervous. My tutor had me put my signature by my name (so the examiners would be able to mark my video) and choose a topic from the list of three. The first topic was, “how do you spend your free time and weekends”. I can’t remember what the third one was because when I saw the second topic, “describe your friends or family”, I think I stopped reading the list. I could do this!

I finger spelled my full name to the camera, and signed my chosen topic, and then had a 5 minute 17 second long conversation with my tutor. I remember signing sad incorrectly.

Instead of having my pinky finger facing outward and my thumb facing inward, I got a bit frazzled and had my pinky finger facing inward and my thumb facing out ward. Other than that though I think I did alright.

I used my face (non manual features) to lend expression to my signs, I showed productive and receptive skills, and it was a good conversation in that not only did I answer questions, but I asked them too, giving appropriate responses to the consequent answers. I think I did pretty well, here’s to hoping the results reflect that 🙂

No news…

How do you do?

It’s been a really long time since I blogged anything. I guess that’s because I was banking on me making regular vlogs over on YouTube. I didn’t get very far with that however…
Life has been plodding along, as it does. 😊
I feel like there should be a lot to update, as I haven’t posted in so long, but I also feel like if there had been anything worthy of updating you with, I probably would have blogged about it in the first place. Nevertheless I will fill you in on a few of the things that stand out.

Firstly one of my uncles helped me paint my living room one weekend a few weeks back. It’s now this lovely shade of pale green.

That’s as far as I’ve gotten in terms of home renovations for the time being, I ordered a shower frame, but I have to return that as what I actually need us some sort of bath frame. So far the time being I am still bath/shower curtain-less. Speaking of curtains, I’m still without curtains for every room in my house. Lol. My mum says I shouldn’t worry though, that home renovation is something you do bit by bit.

In other news it’s nanowrimo time. Fortunately or unfortunately (depending on how you look at things) my laptop is busted. I bought a Bluetooth keyboard, so I could use it with my tablet as a workaround until I get my computer sorted, but what can I say, it’s just not the same.

Since my macbook is pretty old, I’m going to find out if it’s possible to upgrade it to a newer version. In sha Allah (God willing) that works out in my favour. So I’ll be bringing my laptop along to class with me tomorrow, and heading to my Genius Bar appointment afterwards.

Speaking of class BSL (British sign language) has been going really well for me. I got 100% on bsl 101 so I’m proud of myself. I want to replicate that result in the next two exams.

I’m not sure if I mentioned on my blog that I was thinking of going back to university? I’ve given it some more thought, and I’ve decided that instead I’m going to pursue my BSL qualifications and go in to a career in this field 🙂 the higher you go in terms of levels (i.e. BSl lvl 1, BSL lvl 2 etc. ) the more expensive it gets, so I’m going to have to keep saving towards that.

My writing for theatre course is coming to an end next week. We’ll get the opportunity to have our written scenes performed, so I’m looking forward to that.

Other than that things are pretty much the same, I’m still doing scouts (Cub Scout section leader!) although I’ll be taking a week off before each of my next two bsl exams). It’s getting colder in London, and the days are getting shorter.

I guess it’s like they say, no news is good news.

I’m happy, Alhamdulilah.

So that’s all for now.

I’ll try to get back into blogging regularly.

Take care, and thanks for reading
